Who We Are
by Verna
Helen Keller once said, "The marvelous richness of human experience would lose something of rewarding joy, if there were no limitations to overcome".
Hiking, walking and skiing are a motivation for our minds. They are a road to succeed in our hearts because every hike we complete, every mountain we climb, every creek we cross, and every trail we ski, gives us a feeling of success and the ultimate expression of accomplishment not to mention ultimate gratification and satisfaction.
It is the journey, not the destination that makes life a pleasure and when we take the time to marvel at life around us, the beauty of a star spangled sky, or the forest engulfing us, we don't feel in such a hurry to get to where we are going because we realize 'here and now' is a pretty wonderful place to be, especially with special friends that we have in our group.
We range from age of 52 to 77, many of us are grandmothers and some are great grandmothers. We became a hiking group in 1995. Inspired by our own desire to make our dreams come true and wanting to live life to the fullest, we all have the same thoughts in mind. We are careful women who try to avoid potentially dangerous situations, but have had some harrowing experiences to remind us of life's fragility and appreciate the friendship and dependency we have for our fellow hikers and friends.
While our group takes the initiative to make sure that our hiking trips are fun and safe. We as a group all share the responsibility to reach our destination, achieve our goals, and arrive back home safely. Although some of our hikes are not without problems we all deal with them to the best of our ability and ensure that we as a group remain true to our beliefs and those of our friends.
Each and every one of us makes decisions to do what we want to, to forge ahead in a direction that will make us better and stronger individuals. This decision is ours and we have to do everything within our power to make the experience of our trips happy and memorable for ourselves and for all of the others in our group.
I can honestly say, that I as a woman in this group, am inspired by these friend that I have. My friends have shown me courage, weakness, and the ultimate friendship that only true friends possess and give through their actions and care of others. As I said to them on my 60th birthday, "If friends were riches, I would be one of the richest girls in the world"
